It's worse than I thought.
Chapter 18 is hilarious to me. The chinese author forgot he was writing about the US Marines and not China's PLA. The US trains the shit out of its soldiers to prepare them for any and all conceivable scenarios they would face before sending them in with more experienced soldiers to gain experience in combat. China's People's Liberation Army in all its wisdom does none of that. Instead they toss waves of poorly trained recruits into horrific circumstances in hopes that some come back alive as 'elite' soldiers. The PLA also has the issue of being the most terrible mix of wild, bordering insane arrogance and laughable levels of incompetance. It is often shown in the PLA's rediculous propaganda where they do stuff like have some soldiers beat other soldiers with 2x4s to show how tough and ironblooded the chinese soldier is. Probably one of the most hilarious propaganda films I've seen is where they had a sniper in training rub chili powder and lemon juice into his eyes before practicing shooting with his rifle. This wild arrogance and incompetance often happens to bleed in to any novels written by chinese authors about military forces in general as they think the PLA's horribly incompetant way of doing things is the norm everywhere else in the world.
