Super long but interesting story about a privileged wealthy merchant's daughter who is sought out for marriage by a Duke's household for their general son. The ML's stepmother is trying to make him have an embarrassing marriage with trade but she never understands that putting two super talented, driven individuals in one marriage is a bad, bad idea. Lots of harem politics, palace politics and noble family politics - only overlaid with a surprisingly lovely romance. FL and ML finally meet, combine forces and respect each other from day one. Possibly the nicest arranged marriage I've read recently. I must confess, about 3/4 of the way through, when "peace" is finally achieved, it gets a little draggy. It was only when I skipped to the final chapters and realized, "Wait, I need to go re-read those "conversation" chapters that I really got the meat of the story. Yeah, FL is lovely and wealthy and ML is a great honored general but the author lets you see behind their histories. Very much along the lines of The Story of Minglan. Some supernatural stuff but not much.
I'm already in chapter 100 and I don't understand why the title called stepmother
I think it is more supposed to mean “not the first wife” as ML had been married, or at least engaged, 3 times previously. I think it might have something to do with older phrasing for the same idea
